Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As we usher in the new year, it’s crucial to keep track of key tax deadlines. January 2026 is an important month for individual taxpayers, with critical due dates for estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Ensure you’re well-prepared by reviewing what’s due and planning accordingly.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Appointment

The new year marks the onset of tax season. If you haven’t already scheduled an appointment with your tax professional, now is the time to do so. Avoid the last-minute rush and secure your slot early.

January 12 - Deadline for Reporting Tips to Employer

If you’re employed in a role that earns tips and accrued more than $20 in tips during December, you’re required to report this income to your employer by January 12. You can submit IRS Form 4070 or use a personal statement with your details including full name, address, Social Security number, employer’s name and address, the reporting month or period, and total tips received.

Employers must withhold FICA taxes and income tax from these tips. Insufficient regular wages to cover these withholdings will result in the outstanding amount being reported in box 8 of your W-2. Any unpaid taxes should be settled when filing your annual return.

January 15 - Individual Estimated Tax Payment Due

Ensure your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year is filed by this date to avoid penalties. Should you miss this deadline, you must file your 2025 tax return and settle any outstanding tax by February 2, 2026, to prevent incurring an estimated tax penalty.

Weekends & Holidays

If a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it is automatically extended to the next business day, except when that day itself is a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions

Designated disaster areas are granted extended deadlines. For current information on disaster declarations and extended filing dates, visit the following resources:
